Math buddies

Following the success of our Book Buddies program, BUPA decided to launch a similar Maths Buddies scheme. Instead of improving the reading age of the child, the program aims to improve their maths ability.

The Maths Buddies volunteering scheme is currently being run in London and Staines with plans to expand it to Brighton, Manchester and Leeds by the end of 2007.

How does it work?

BUPA Math Buddies volunteers devote one lunch hour a week to help local primary school children with maths. As well as trying to improve the child's mathematical ability, it also aims to develop their confidence and self-esteem in the classroom. The primary schools selected are usually located just a few moments from the volunteers' place of work.

It is very important that all volunteers working with children have CRB clearance. Because of this, Community Connections works very hard on the volunteer's behalf to ensure that everybody understands the process. The Community Connections team also provide training so that the volunteers feel confident and happy when they walk into the classroom.

Although it was slightly daunting walking into a class of children, as soon as you start talking to the them you soon forget your nerves and it ends up being a wonderful experience. It's great to know that you are making a difference and its good to be able to get away from your desk at lunchtimes.
