 Welcome to BUPA Community Connections

Welcome to Community Connections

At Bupa, we don't just pay lip service to our brand statement of '...caring for you as an individual,' we take it very seriously and this is reflected in the work our people do everyday.

As part of this, Community Connections helps ensure that we identify and address some of the health and wellbeing needs of the communities in which we live and work.

Our volunteering programmes have traditionally focused on the UK but are now increasingly gaining an international flavour, in line with Bupa's overseas expansion.

This year, Bupa has set up a standalone fund - Bupa Giving - to celebrate our 60th year. This £9 million fund will help to support various international charitable causes over the next three years.

In addition to this, the Bupa Group gave £5.3 million to UK charities, including £292,000 raised by staff which was matched by Community Connections. We also encourage employee volunteering and last year 3984 people volunteered 25,402 hours of Bupa's time, valued at over £431,000.

Bupa makes every effort improve the effect we have on the communities in which we operate. Because of this we are one of over 750 companies who are members of Business in the Community (BITC), which includes around 70 percent of the FTSE 100 companies. Bupa is also a member of BITC's Percent Standard - a group of companies that donate at least one percent of their pre tax profits to charity. Last year we gave 2.68 percent to charitable causes, nearly tripling the standard donation.

Fundraising

Last year Bupa staff fundraised £410,000, helping almost 300 charitable causes. Community Connections supports Bupa people by either matching or 'topping up' the amount raised.

Bupa team challenges

In 2006 756 Bupa people took part in team challenges, providing 4000 hours worth of man hours to help their local communities. Community Connections supports Bupa staff by sourcing the challenges and supplying all the necessary materials needed to make the challenge a success.

Caring for older people

Bupa's commitment to treating and caring for people as individuals lies at the core of our work in caring for the elderly. Community Connections, together with Bupa Care Services, have created several initiatives to support the work we do with older people.
