BUPA
employs the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) payroll-giving programme Give As You Earn. This is a tax-effective way of donating to your favourite charity, direct from your gross salary. The benefits of Give As You Earn include:
- the scheme is open to any member of staff or pensioner who has PAYE tax deducted
- your donation goes to the charity of your choice
- it is an effective way of raising large amounts of money from small groups of people
- a 10% government funded supplement (paid from public expenditure) is offered to charities
- as the method is tax-effective, every £10 you donate only costs you £7.70 if you are a basic rate taxpayer and £6.00 if you pay the higher rate of tax
- BUPA has decided to fund match the Government’s contribution of 10% on each charitable donation
BUPA recently won a 'Smile' award from the CAF for the launch of the BUPA Give As You Earn scheme. Only two Smile awards are given each year, to recognise a company's commitment to the initiative.

CAF Give As You Earn manager, Karen Waters, said, "BUPA's scheme has been met with bags of enthusiasm and commitment from all involved. With 40,000 employees it has taken some co-ordinating and planning, particularly as it has a diverse workforce from call centre staff to hospital and care employees located throughout the UK. Well done BUPA."
Monica Owen from the Community Connections team said, "We have had a positive early uptake of people pledging support for the scheme. It is open to all of our UK employees. Colleagues who have not yet decided on what cause they might want to support have not yet missed out. You can join at any time."
