Mentoring
As part of our education programme, BUPA employees have also been giving their time to help out in secondary schools, by acting as mentors to students. The BUPA volunteers meet with their students once a fortnight to provide support, guidance, assistance and encouragement.
Students are selected for the programme for a variety of reasons: they may not be performing to their full potential; they may require advice and guidance on what to do when they leave school; or they may just want to have someone else to talk to - someone who is outside of their usual home and school environment.
There are many benefits to be gained from mentoring, for both volunteer and student. As well as raising the achievement levels of the student, mentoring can also increase confidence and motivation. The volunteering mentors themselves also benefit from a sense of achievement, whilst improving their communication skills and gaining a better insight into the issues that concern young people.
