Chelsea survey shows residents are a bunch of old romantics

A special survey of Bupa care home residents proved that romance is still blossoming down the years.

Older people living in Bupa's 303 care homes in the UK were asked to name their favourite flowers and tell us the reasons behind their choices. These would then be reflected in the planting of Bupa's show garden.

The clear winner was that traditional token of love - the red rose.

And the most popular reason was it brought back memories of residents' courting days. Whether it was giving a rose to a wife-to-be or brides having roses in their wedding bouquets, no other flower came close.

Residents' top 10 flowers were:

  1. Roses
  2. Carnations
  3. Daffodils
  4. Tulips
  5. Lilies
  6. Sweet Peas
  7. Pansies
  8. Dahlias
  9. Snowdrops
  10. Chrysanthemums

There was also a serious side to the survey. It was undertaken as part of a programme of activities at Bupa care homes designed to help people with memory loss or conditions such as dementia.

Dr Graham Stokes, head of mental health at Bupa Care Homes, said: "Conducting this survey not only helped to bring back happy memories, but also, means we learn a little more about our residents, which helps us to give the best care to each individual."
