Bupa employees get gardening at Chelsea
Five green-fingered employees from Bupa Care Homes have been given a once in a lifetime chance to help create a garden at this year's RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
Karin Welzel and Katie Wetherall, who both work as gardeners at Bupa care homes in Hertfordshire and London, have been selected as part of a team of Bupa employees who will be helping award-winning garden designer, Cleve West as he plants Bupa's show garden at Chelsea.
Joining Karin and Katie will be Christine Hawkins, an activities organiser at Bupa's Oakcroft House in Surrey and Carmen Rodrigues from Bupa's Crispins and Loadhams in Farnham. The fifth lucky employee is Karen Harley from Bupa Care Homes' head office in Leeds. All the employees have been nominated by their managers and are set to put all their effort into planting, pruning and building the garden alongside Cleve.
"Gardening is a passion of mine and I'm over the moon that I have been selected to help plant Bupa's show garden at Chelsea. Being offered this chance is for me like a chef being asked to cook at The Ritz - it's something I'd only dreamed of doing", said Katie Wetherall.
Christine Hawkins continued: "The Bupa garden is special not just because it has been designed by Cleve West, but also because it is a sensory garden, which can be enjoyed by people of all ages. For example, it has been deliberately designed to have a pathway, which runs around the whole garden that is wide enough for wheelchair access."
All five employees are looking forward to using the skills they learn at Chelsea in gardens at Bupa's care homes, for all residents to enjoy.
Bupa's show garden is the company's first foray at Chelsea. As one of the UK's leading care home providers, Bupa has ensured that its garden will contain special features that that can be enjoyed by older people and those with dementia. Over the last seven years sensory gardens have been created in over 250 Bupa care homes.
