Walking to cure diabetes with JDRF
Help find a cure for juvenile diabetes - and enjoy a day out in the open air
The JDRF five mile walks to cure diabetes are a great way for families and corporate teams to get out in the open air and support a good cause. As well as improving your fitness, you'll be helping the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) raise money for research into type 1 diabetes. Bupa Community Connections is again helping to sponsor the walks.

JDRF and their search for a cure
JDRF is the leading charitable funder and advocate of type 1 diabetes
research worldwide. JDRF is dedicated to funding research to find a cure
for type 1 (juvenile) diabetes, which strikes children suddenly, makes them
insulin-dependent for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating
complications.
In type 1 diabetes insulin injections and multiple daily blood tests are
essential to stay alive. However these do not cure diabetes or prevent
long term complications including blindness, amputations, kidney failure,
heart disease and strokes.

Where your sponsorship money goes
Since inception JDRF has been responsible for more than £500 million direct
funding of the most promising and groundbreaking research around the world,
including £65 million for 500 grants, centres and fellowships in 19
countries in 2002 alone. The charity has funded, at least in part, every
major research breakthrough in the last thirty years, and focuses on
research with the greatest impact, leading to a cure as soon as possible.
