The Bupa Great North Run is the largest half-marathon run in the world. It attracted an astonishing 52,000 runners in 2008. The event is staged between Newcastle upon Tyne and South Shields.
It has been awarded the highest quality mark available - IAAF Gold Label status. The International Association of Athletics Federations only bestows Gold Label status on events that attract world-class athletes and are organised and staged to the highest possible standards.
