Bupa International launches a worldwide revolution in health cover
1 July 2009
Today, a new individual medical insurance package that puts the power of choice in customers' hands is being launched by Bupa International, the world's largest expatriate health insurer.
Worldwide Health Options is a flexible plan that can be tailor-made to suit individual customers' needs. It has been developed following comprehensive customer research and combines the best elements of Bupa International's individual products into one plan.
With worldwide medical insurance at its heart, it is modular and features four 'bolt on' options covering
- specialist treatment including situations where a hospital stay is not required
- prescribed medicines and medical equipment
- health screening, vaccinations, dental and optical treatment and
- worldwide evacuation for people who are unable to get the treatment they need in a local hospital
USA cover is a further option, as well as a range of deductibles (similar to excesses) to help customers manage the cost of their cover. Plans can be assembled to suit customers' individual circumstances and the country where they spend most of their time which means they only pay for the cover they need.
Customers can be treated in any one of Bupa's 5,500 participating hospitals and clinics worldwide including the Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg which has a world-renowned trauma unit, the Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami - one of the top-rated hospitals in the USA with more than 50 specialisms including head and spinal neurosurgery and neonatal intensive care – and the Prince Court Medical Centre in Malaysia which specialises in oncology, urology, burns treatment and heart and lung surgery.
Customers also have access to Bupa's doctors and in-house medical teams in Brighton and Copenhagen – unique among private medical insurers – who arrange hundreds of emergency evacuations and repatriations each year and offer general medical advice and guidance, 24 hours a day. The doctors are experts in high altitude diseases, tropical infections, patient evacuations and home transportations. They also have extensive experience of diagnosing and treating cancer, heart disorders and musculoskeletal conditions. Bupa's multi-lingual advisers speak more than 30 languages and handle 500 calls a day - about everything from minor injuries to emergency evacuation – offering comfort to customers wherever they are in the world. Bupa can help with medical referrals, booking advice, second opinions, travel and security information. And, should a medical evacuation be necessary, Bupa can arrange an air ambulance, travel on a commercial flight with or without medical escorts, stretcher transportation and travel arrangements for relatives and friends.
David Grint, commercial director for Bupa International, said: "Bupa Worldwide Health Options has been in development for 18 months. We have listened to our customers and taken the 'best in class' to create one powerful solution that works around the world offering more choice without additional complexity. From emergency situations such as an evacuation or repatriation, to just providing peace of mind to someone living in a country with poor healthcare provision, for our customers it is about access to good reliable facilities anywhere in the world.
"Research shows that our customers and intermediaries wanted to be able to tailor cover to match their healthcare needs. The modular nature of the new plan enables us to offer people more choice and be more responsive to our customers' requirements. And as we move into new territories we can adapt the modules, rather than having to establish a new product that accounts for local compliance and regulation issues. Worldwide Health Options is a great leap forward and raises the bar for Bupa and the industry in general," he said.
As well as round-the-clock telephone support, Bupa International customers can manage their cover online where they can access a comprehensive library of information. They can view their plan, update their personal details, track the progress of their claims, make payments, download forms and talk to Bupa 24 hours a day, every day, using the free webchat service. This is all backed up by direct settlement of bills for treatment in Bupa's worldwide network of hospitals and clinics as well as prompt turnaround of claims, with Bupa International processing over 15,000 claims a week.
