The Virtual Bupa Run - to celebrate the Bupa Great North Run 2003
1 August 2003
Bupa has teamed up with Harpers Fitness Clubs to create a special initiative to celebrate the world famous Bupa Great North Run - the Virtual Bupa Run!
The Bupa Great North Run is the world's largest half-marathon and the UK's biggest road-running race. The popularity of the event is such that all 47,000 places are allocated well before the closing date every year.
The Virtual Bupa Run has been created for Harpers Fitness Clubs to offer runners an alternative yet synchronised event. Virtual runners will be able to challenge themselves to a half-marathon and still feel part of the overall event.
The Virtual Bupa Run will take place on treadmills in participating Harpers Fitness Clubs across the UK. Gym televisions will be tuned to the continuous live coverage of the Great North Run on BBC1 from 9.30am on Sunday 21 September. The Virtual Bupa Run will start in sync with the real event; the only difference being members will have one week to complete the challenge.
Participants will be raising funds for Leukaemia Research Fund (LRF), Bupa's nominated charity for the event. The LRF's campaign theme for the Bupa Great Run Series is "have more fun while you run" and Bupa and Harpers hope the virtual runners will do just that. Funds raised from the Virtual Bupa Run will play an important role in funding further research into curing this life-threatening disease.
