Bupa Travel brings peace of mind to gap year travellers and their parents

01 August 2005

Bupa Travel has launched a new insurance product to reassure the parents of the 150,000 young people in the UK who are heading off on a gap year after their exams. The policy covers the many activities and adventures that young people plan for their gap year, giving parents peace of mind while their children are exploring foreign climes.

The policy Explorer covers a huge range of activities from bungee jumping to white water rafting and gorilla trekking, as well as trips where lots of countries may be visited in a short space of time.

Bupa Travel Services manager Nick Potter said: "Time out, if properly planned, offers an exciting, educating and rewarding experience that is valued by universities and employers alike. But gap year travellers often expose themselves to a higher level of risk than they would on a normal holiday and many standard policies will not offer adequate levels of cover. Explorer will enable gap year travellers to take out cover that is tailored appropriately to their trip, no matter how long it is or how many countries they visit."

Explorer is available to people between 18 and 35 years. It is suitable for travellers taking a gap year before university as well as more mature travellers taking a career break, whether they are planning a three month trip through Europe or a trip around the world of over a year. Available with bronze, silver and gold levels of cover, Explorer offers benefits tailored specifically to the needs of more adventurous travellers. The policy covers the cost of student loans if the traveller is involved in an accident while abroad that affects their ability to keep up repayments. In addition, policy holders who are involved in an accident and hospitalised abroad for five days or more receive a Bupa health assessment worth £250.
