Bupa acquires home healthcare specialist Clinovia

1 December 2006

Bupa today announced that it has acquired Clinovia, the UK’s home healthcare specialist for £87.7 million from Lyceum Capital. The acquisition of Clinovia will give Bupa new opportunities in the expanding out of hospital care market.

Clinovia, which was established in 1975, provides comprehensive home healthcare for more than 8,500 patients a month with a wide range of medical and chronic conditions like multiple sclerosis and haemophilia so they can enjoy a better quality of life. It has around 450 staff at sites in Harlow, Manchester, Derby and Glasgow.

The company has a strong network among NHS hospitals and PCTs and is a growing business in an area the government has identified as a priority and wants to see more independent sector involvement.

Commenting on the purchase, Bupa chief executive Val Gooding said: “We see this acquisition as an important early step in offering a broader range of healthcare services in a home and community setting. The combination of the management team and Clinovia’s track record in delivering services together with our breadth of experience in the health and care industry will help us target new opportunities.”

Clinovia’s business involves delivering prescribed drugs and intravenous feeds to patients at home, an integrated care package for patients with higher levels of dependency like spinal injury and supporting those with learning difficulties.

Miss Gooding added: “In its recent White Paper ‘our health our say’ the government has been increasing its focus on preventative health, providing more care for people in the community with long term needs and away from acute hospital settings. Combine that with an ageing population, more people living alone without support and the rise in heath costs associated with new drugs and treatments means there will be a greater role for out of hospital care in the future. There are also many opportunities including cancer care and care following elective surgery which we see as areas of growth.”

Clinovia managing director Robbie Burns added: “We are delighted that Clinovia has become part of the Bupa Group which will bring benefits to patients, customers and staff alike. Bupa’s investment and support will enable us to achieve our plans to deliver a wider range of products and services to support more patients at home or in the community.”

Lyceum CEO Philip Buscombe said: “We have worked with the Clinovia team to build a major business on the basis of outstanding service to customers, partners and patients. The acquisition by Bupa is an endorsement of the company’s success and we wish Robbie Burns and all the Clinovia staff well in the next stage of the company’s growth.”
