Hull's chance to get healthy
03 March 2004
It has not been a great week for Hull after it was condemned as the fattest city in the country by a nationwide survey. But with a new Bupa Wellness centre opening the people of Hull have the perfect opportunity to redeem themselves and tip the scales back in their favour.
By checking in for a health MOT at the new centre and spending time with a specially trained doctor and health adviser, people will be able to find out exactly what their eating, drinking and lifestyle habits are doing to their health. The checks on offer range from the most comprehensive which includes over 40 separate tests to those designed specifically for women and older people.
Dr Peter Mace, Bupa Wellness medical director said: “Because you get your test results there and then, you can spend time with the doctor discussing how to make lifestyle changes which will improve your health. For instance the chances of developing heart disease, which kills one British adult every three minutes are higher if you are obese.”
Dr Mace continued, “Seven out of 10 people who have had one of our health assessments have made lifestyle changes as a result and a third of people said we uncovered something about their health they were previously unaware of.”
“Last week’s report by Derek Wanless said that the real public health challenge is to engage people in their own health. We believe one of the best ways to do that is to ensure people know their blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar level, weight and have an opportunity to discuss how to improve them with a health expert” concluded Dr Mace.
The new Wellness centre is based at the Bupa Hull and East Riding Hospital. To find out more about the full range of health assessments on offer please call 0845 601 4915 (lines are open between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday) or visit: www.bupa.co.uk/wellness.
