Bupa Hospitals is first to publish patient-friendly outcomes data

Patients and GPs can now access easy-to-read outcomes data about all Bupa Hospitals thanks to a pioneering new initiative.
For the first time, a range of information about Bupa Hospitals’ clinical and service quality will be available online – making it the first independent sector provider to publish this range of data in a user-friendly format.
The information being published on the www.bupahospitals.co.uk website includes the following:
- infections rates – for both MRSA and hip surgical site infections
- re-admission rates
- return to theatre rates
- patient reported health improvement results following hip replacements and cataract surgery
- patient satisfaction with aspects of treatment such as consultant quality of service, nursing care, hospital cleanliness and quality of food
Bupa Hospitals undertook a consultation exercise on indicators of clinical quality with patients, GPs and consultants, and identified these measures as being the most relevant. Patients considering treatment at a Bupa hospital can now make more informed healthcare choices by viewing these clinical and service indicators.
Bupa Hospitals leads the UK in the use of patient reported outcome measures to monitor health gain following treatment. Whilst the programme started in 1998, this is the first time these outcome results have been published so widely in a patient-friendly format.

"We believe that patients can only make a meaningful choice about their healthcare when they have full access to the information they need. Our initiative provides relevant information on frequently undertaken procedures," she continued.
The information can be accessed on a hospital-by-hospital basis at www.bupahospitals.co.uk in a new area of the site called ‘Hospital performance’.
