Bupa strengthens business with acquisition of ANS Care Home Group
6 August 2005
Bupa Care Homes today announced that it has acquired ANS 2003 plc, the seventh largest care home operator in the UK for £328m. The acquisition of ANS consolidates Bupa’s position as the leading care home operator in the UK with over 21,000 beds and 297 homes with a combined turnover in excess of £535m.
ANS has 44 high quality care homes providing nursing and sub-acute care to older people and younger adults with complex nursing needs. Founded in 1981, the company has built a national portfolio of mainly purpose-built care homes. The company is particularly well represented in London with 12 homes plus a further 11 homes in the South East of England and will improve Bupa Care Homes geographical coverage. ANS has an annual turnover of £90m and a care home operating profit, excluding depreciation, of £30m per annum.
Commenting on the acquisition, Bupa Care Homes managing director Mark Ellerby said: “We are delighted to be able to announce the acquisition of ANS today. ANS is one of the finest care home groups in the UK and a very successful business and this acquisition will help to improve the range of care services we offer to our residents.”
ANS Chairman Nick Dhandsa and the other three directors will leave the business. Dr Dhandsa said: “BUPA is the leading player in this sector with a wealth of experience and like ANS has a reputation for quality. This is a positive move for our residents and employees.”
Mark Ellerby added: “This move demonstrates Bupa’s commitment to the long term care sector. The quality and design of ANS’s care homes together with the experience of the employees will further strengthen our existing business. We look forward to working with our new colleagues to continue to provide the highest levels of care to our residents.”
