Britain holds first World Conference on Track and Field sponsored by Bupa
6 September 2005
The cream of the world’s coaches and sports medicine experts are to meet in Newcastle for the first ever World Conference on Track and Field.
For the first time under one roof, medical, scientific and performance aspects of track and field will be debated as the nation focuses on 2012 and the hosting of the Olympics.
The groundbreaking ‘Run, Jump, Throw’ event will bring together an array of athletic greats from Brendon Foster MBE to David Moorcroft and Mike Macfarlane OBE. Lining up alongside them will be some of the world’s top coaches and sport doctors including Dr Bryan English, Professor David Collins from UK Athletics and Dr Paul Dijkstra, sport physician to South African and International Track and Field athletes.
All will offer their insight and experience to over 200 healthcare professionals and coaches from around the world.
Staged on 13 and 14 September 2005, the conference held at the Newcastle Civic Centre has been organised by Great Run, developed by Dr Bryan English on behalf of the United Kingdom Association of Doctors in Sport, backed by UK Athletics and UK Sport, and sponsored by Bupa.
Dr Andrew Vallance-Owen, Bupa Group Medical Director said
“As we gear up to 2012, this is a unique opportunity for sports medicine experts to collaborate with professional athletes, to increase our understanding of athletic performance. Getting a wide range of experts together is vital to gain the best overview on how to prevent and treat sports injuries. Bupa is excited to be sponsoring such a groundbreaking event that stands to benefit so many people who take part in sport, from charity fun-runners to Britain’s future gold medallists.”
Dr Bryan English, former chief medical officer of UK Athletics and current medical officer to Chelsea Football Club added
“I have been delighted to develop this high level multidisciplinary conference on behalf of the United Kingdom Association of Doctors in Sport. The event will be a great opportunity to explore some of the key themes associated with sport and exercise medicine in athletics with the separate sessions of Run, Jump and Throw providing a clear focus to the programme. This event will set the precedence for future high level sport and exercise medicine conferences focusing on key aspects of athletics.”
Dr Charlotte Cowie (Chairperson UKADIS, Tottenham Hotspur Team Doctor) said
“The United Kingdom Association of Doctors in Sport is delighted to be associated with this high quality meeting which encompasses the important relationship between our elite athletes, the exercising public and the health professionals who look after all of them. The medical meeting covers the issues which doctors working at the 'sharp end' of sports medicine deal with everyday and I look forward to an informative and challenging programme of lectures.”
The ‘Run, Jump, Throw’ conference will take place alongside the celebration of the 25th Bupa Great North Run on 18 September 2005.
