Get the jab on the job - Bupa tackles work flu
7 September 2005
Bupa is urging companies to act now and get their employees vaccinated against the flu as concerns grow over a shortage of the vaccine.
"Demand is such that we were planning to double the number of vaccinations given last year," says Martyn Anthony, the head of specialist services at Bupa Wellness, "but we are facing difficulties getting hold of the vaccines because there is a limited supply available.
"Therefore we're asking companies keen to protect their workforce against flu this winter to ensure they don't leave it too late, or they could face disappointment."
According to the Confederation of British Industry, workplace absence cost the UK more than £12 billion last year. Ninety percent of time off work was short term and due to minor illness such as flu. Almost seven working days were lost per employee in 2004 at a cost of £495 each person.
Currently the Department of Health offers free vaccinations each year to people aged 65 and over and those with certain medical conditions.
"Flu is highly infectious, particularly in the workplace and can cost a business dearly in lost productivity. Up to fifteen percent of a company's workforce can be absent with flu over the winter months," says Martyn Anthony.
"At an average cost of around £10 per employee, a flu vaccination is an inexpensive investment to help protect a company’s productivity and keep staff working to the best of their ability.”
Last year Bupa Wellness delivered over 15,000 inoculations to around 350 companies. This year the health assessment specialist is looking to vaccinate twice as many people and will be starting its annual flu jab programme earlier than ever.
"Our advice is to contact us as soon as possible. Demand is increasing all the time and placing a growing pressure on the amount of vaccine available," insists Martyn Anthony.
Flu jabs will be available from mid September to December. More information can be found at www.bupawellness.co.uk
