Wild site tamed so guides can carry on camping
08 March 2004
Bupa insurance staff in Staines recently swapped staplers for shears and desks for ditches when they took on the challenge of landscaping an overgrown Girl Guide campsite, at Polesden Lacey National Trust near Dorking.
The 20-strong team set to work removing a large barbed-wire fence and battled with the undergrowth to create a safe and secure environment for the guides to stay. The exterior of the guides’ hut was also given a fresh coat of paint.
The challenge was part of an initiative to motivate and develop the team’s spirit while making a difference to the community. David Newton, a Bupa project manager reflected: “It was a great way for the team to come together and work towards a common goal. Everyone worked really hard to make the day a huge success.”
John Cranham, head warden at Polesden Lacey said: “We were extremely pleased to welcome the team from Bupa. They’ve made an invaluable contribution to the site and to the 300 guides who visit each year. It would not have been possible without them as we really rely on the 38,000 volunteers we get each year to keep everything running. Without this kind of voluntary support, the National Trust would really struggle.”
The National Trust was founded in 1895 and now cares for over 600,000 acres of countryside across the UK. The site at Polesden Lacey in Great Bookham boasts extensive gardens and a Regency house with collections of fine paintings, furniture, porcelain and silver.
Community Connections, Bupa’s programme that supports and encourages employees in their voluntary and fundraising activities, helped to organise the event. Last year over 2,000 Bupa employees took part in similar activities and more than £100,000 was raised for charity.
“The Community Connections programme continues to be a great success,” added Monica Owen, Bupa’s community affairs manager. “It is projects like this which really make a difference. Over the coming months there will be many more teams of Bupa people taking part in similar initiatives. Volunteering is a great way for employees to develop as a team while giving something back to the community.”
