Nurses to honour Florence Nightingale at national service

Three nurses from England, Scotland and Wales have been awarded scholarships, and given an opportunity to honour Florence Nightingale at a national commemorative service on Wednesday 10 May 2006, at Westminster Abbey.
The nurses’ travel scholarships, valued at a total of £10,000, are funded each year by Bupa. A further £6000 is donated for the commemorative service, held to celebrate the professions of nursing and midwifery and attended by about 2000 nurses, midwives, health visitors and Government Ministers.
These nurses have been awarded the Florence Nightingale Foundation 2006 Travel Scholarships by Bupa for specific projects connected with their field of work:
- Christine Hoy, a nurse practitioner based at the NHS Restalrig Park Medical Centre in Edinburgh. Awarded a scholarship to study 'Introduction of case management, patient self-care models and role of community matron to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals with chronic conditions' in Canada, USA & UK.
- Lynne Roberts, a nurse consultant (serious mental illness), based at St Tydfils Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil. Awarded a scholarship to study 'Families First! Families' experience of behavioural family therapy in Wales, the West Midlands and Australia.
- Veronica Swallow, a senior lecturer in nursing based at Northumbria University. Awarded a scholarship to study: 'Family learning in chronic childhood illness: a comparison of cultures in Canada and the USA.
The travel scholarships are available to all UK-based British and Commonwealth nurses and midwives registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council for work that will directly benefit their patients and profession.
Bupa has also committed a further £50,000 to fund a bespoke scholarship programme for six top nurses in the UK to gain leadership experience and improve their skills.
