Northlands House celebrates official launch

12 July 2005

Northlands House, the new Bupa nursing home on Westrow Road, Southampton celebrates its official opening on Tuesday 12 July 2005 at 12.30pm. Miss Millicent Austin (known as Betty), who lived in the original building for almost 30 years and is moving into the new Northlands House nursing home, will lead the opening ceremony by cutting the ceremonial ribbon and officially opening the doors to the new home.

Representatives from Southampton City Council, Southampton City Primary Care Trust (PCT) and Bupa Care Homes will also attend the opening ceremony, including Brad Roynon, Chief Executive of Southampton City Council, Dr John Beer, Executive Director of Health and Social Care, Councillor Norah Goss, Cabinet member for Adult Social Services and Pauline Quan-Arrow, Chairman of the PCT.

The new Northlands House has been built on the site of the former care facility of the same name, with the new development retaining original features including the keystone and stained glass windows.

Millicent Austin, 89, who has been blind for most of her life, lived in the former care home before it was closed. She is looking forward to moving in to the new Northlands House, which has been built by Bupa Care Homes in partnership with Southampton City Council and Southampton City PCT when it opens on 11 July.

Miss Austin commented: "I am really looking forward to the official launch of Northlands House and it is a real pleasure to be asked to cut the ribbon. Moving in will feel like returning home to me."

The new purpose built home offers 101 beds for elderly frail nursing and residential care and provides quality long-term care for older people in the Southampton area. The three-story building includes ensuite bathrooms to all 101 bedrooms and special features including underfloor heating and adjoining rooms for partners.

Peter Ludford, Director Care Homes at Bupa, commented: "The success of this project is testament to the excellent relationship we have had with everyone involved in bringing this development to Southampton. We are looking forward to welcoming our first residents over the coming days and will be accommodating long and short stay residents, both under contract with the council and privately funded."

Pauline Quan-Arrow, Chair of Southampton City PCT, said: "We are extremely pleased to see Northlands House is opening, which is the result of an excellent working relationship between ourselves, Southampton City Council and Bupa. It will help Southampton City residents stay in Southampton for their nursing care instead of moving to care homes outside of the city, as well as helping to reduce delayed transfers from hospital. We hope the new residents will enjoy the new facilities."

Cabinet member for Adult Social Services, Councillor Norah Goss said: "We are delighted to be reopening Northlands House in partnership with Bupa and Southampton Primary Care Trust as it will be a great opportunity for people in Southampton. This was one of the first schemes in the country to develop an innovative partnership approach to ‘joined-up’ working by the health and local authority working collaboratively with the independent sector. We are sure this partnership is going to be a great success."
