Lord Lieutenant presents Queen's Award to Brighton-based Bupa International

12 July 2005

Brighton-based Bupa International, the largest expatriate health insurer in the world, was presented with the Queen's Award for Enterprise on Thursday 7 July. This is the second time Bupa International has won a Queen's Award, having been a previous winner for export achievement in 1999.

The Lord Lieutenant, Mrs Phyllida Stewart-Roberts on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen, presented the award. Joining Mrs Roberts on the day was Vice Lord Lieutenant, Mr Peter Field and Assistant Clerk to the Lieutenancy, Mrs Hilary Humphreys and other local dignitaries. The award is one of only seven Queen's Awards for Innovation issued throughout the South East region.

Keith Biddlestone, managing director of Bupa International said:

"We are thrilled to receive a Queen's Award, which is down to the hard work of the team at Bupa International. With over half a million customers around the world, we work hard to understand the needs of our members and are always looking to develop new ways of delivering even better value healthcare.

"Over the last few years the business has gone from strength to strength and we have more than doubled our export earnings over the past six years. We hope to build on this success to help give even more people living and working abroad peace of mind about their healthcare."

Stephen Brice, Secretary for the Queen's Awards, said:

"We are looking for entrepreneurs, business men and women, inventors and innovators who give their time and, possibly, financial support to other potential entrepreneurs whether or not they are still in education or at the business start-up stage.

"Unlike many business awards, The Queen's Awards for Enterprise recognise the contribution made by the whole workforce and presentations such as this give management, staff, customers and suppliers an opportunity to celebrate this most prestigious business accolade.

"Companies wishing to emulate Bupa International’s success can enter for The Queen's Award 2006. The closing date is 31 October and winners will be announced on Her Majesty’s birthday next April. Successful candidates and those who nominate them will be invited to an evening reception at Buckingham Palace."
