Bupa graduates are up for the challenge
12 October 2006
Twelve graduates on the Bupa Graduate Programme are aiming to raise £10,000 for charity by buddying-up with disabled people in the Bupa Great South Run.
The run, which takes place on Sunday 22 October, is the world’s second largest 10 mile race and attracts around 18,000 entrants. The graduates will accompany the disabled people around the course in Portsmouth.
Among those to be assisted are three residents from the unit for younger physically disabled people at Bupa Wingham Court care home in Claygate.
Wheelchair users Jayson Robinson, Spencer Thomas and Misha Heselwood are to compete in the company of graduates Philippa Mardon, Abedul Hussain, Sarah McCormick and Richard Pennington.
Michelle Oates, member of the Graduate Challenge Team, said: “For our final race, the Bupa Great South Run, we decided to focus not only on raising money but on helping people with disabilities to enjoy the achievement of taking part in the event.
“As a graduate group we took the time to visit the entrants, talk to them and find out about any support they might need to ensure they enjoyed the event.”
Dave Hocking, also a member of the Graduate Team, said: “We have worked very closely with various disability organisations, including the English Federation for Disabled Sport (EFDS), in preparation for this challenge. What we have learnt on the disabilities awareness course, run by former Paralympics athlete Marcus Asbury, has given us all the information that we require to help us to fulfil our roles.”
The three charities who are to benefit from the Bupa Graduate Great Run Challenge are UK Deaf Sport, The Disability Trust and ASPIRE. The challenge has involved the graduates taking part in four Bupa sponsored runs – the Bupa Great Run Manchester, Bupa Capital 10k, Bupa Great North Run and the Bupa Great South Run.
Tanya Richardson, Marketing and Fundraising Officer at The Disabilities Trust, said: “The Disabilities Trust is very grateful to the Bupa Graduate Challenge team for their fantastic support and commitment. We rely on donations such as this to help provide vital equipment and resources in our new services across the country for people with complex disabilities.”
Andrew Ogierman, Community Fundraiser at ASPIRE, said: “ASPIRE is delighted that the Bupa Graduate Challenge Team has chosen to run and raise funds for people with spinal cord injury in various Great Run events during 2006 and everyone at ASPIRE wishes them well.”
