Self defence course innovator wins employee award
14 July 2003
A woman who works at Salford Quays decided to take decisive action against last winter’s sudden increase in local car crime, theft and vandalism. Elaine Townsend, clinical adviser at Bupa Insurance, set up a programme of self-defence and personal safety classes in co-ordination with the local constabulary for co-workers on the Quay. In recognition for her efforts Elaine was awarded £2000 worth of holiday vouchers and a commemorative cut glass trophy by Bupa chief executive, Val Gooding.
Elaine was one of five Salford Quays whose innovative ideas were chosen from 2,000 suggestions, 25 percent of which have been successfully implemented, made by Bupa staff. The awards ceremony, in its fifth year, took place at The Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden and was attended by friends and families of the winners.
Commenting on her award, Elaine Townsend, said: “I never dreamed my idea would get this far and receive this type of recognition from my colleagues. I was just pleased that so many people were involved and got so much out of the classes.”
Four other Bupa employees from Salford, Lisa Allmark, Dave McAndrew, Bernie Gannon and Rick Holden, also won awards for their ideas and suggestions.
Val Gooding, Bupa chief executive said: “It’s a privilege for me to recognise Bupa people who are role models and an inspiration to others. We are always looking for small improvements as well as bigger ideas and these are examples of people demonstrating real energy and commitment to considering problems both great and small and developing solutions.”
Throughout the year hundreds of Bupa employees get involved with the Greater Manchester community through the company’s Community Connections programme. Most recently it launched a new life education unit at The Lowry with the help of Coronation Street star, Bill Roach.
