Balnacarron Care home celebrates £185,000 new look

11 January 2008

The people of St Andrews are invited to celebrate the official unveiling of a major refurbishment of one of their local care homes, after the residents helped plan and design much of the refit themselves.

At a special ceremony, the Provost of Fife Frances Melville, will cut the ribbon at BUPA’s Balnacarron Residential Home in Hepburn Gardens, St Andrews, and open the doors to the public to reveal the results of the £185,000 refurbishment.

The top-to-toe makeover at Balnacarron has included redecorating, the creation of larger rooms, doubling the number of rooms with en-suite facilities and replacing furniture throughout the home. A brighter new lighting system and plasma TVs in communal areas have also been introduced.

And the work has not stopped there. The outside has also been spruced up as major works have being carried out in the gardens with new planting schemes, and the creation of more raised beds and wider pathways to make them even more accessible to residents who use wheelchairs.

The refurbishment is part of BUPA’s drive to improve standards in the care home sector, and has proved a real hit with the residents of Balnacarron, who have been involved in the new design every step of the way. One of the residents, 88-year-old Mary McBride, said: “The new, fresh decor, furniture and design have really uplifted the residents’ spirits and the work has made such a difference. Now, Balnacarron is even more welcoming to visitors.”

Home manager Michelle Wilson said: “What has been very important about this project is that the residents have been fully involved in the planning process from the start. This is their home and all our work has been guided by their view on how Balnacarron should look.

“Since November when the revamp began a lot of care and attention has gone into the design and we’re all over the moon with the result and we hope all the local community will come and see our bright new look.”

The public are invited to join the Provost of Fife at Balnacarron from 2pm until 4pm on Friday 11 January, for an opportunity to see around the care home and to enjoy a buffet and entertainment.
