New Bupa care home hosts forum on dementia
15 May 2006
Bupa Care Homes is hosting a forum on dementia care on 23 May at Chilworth Manor in advance of the official launch of Knights’ Grove, its new nursing and residential home in North Baddesley, Southampton, later in the month.
Bupa estimates that there are approximately 3,800 local people, living within 20 miles of Knights’ Grove, who suffer from some form of dementia and is holding the forum to raise awareness of the many issues involved in providing care for dementia sufferers.
Bupa will be officially opening the doors to Knights’ Grove on 30 May. The nursing home will specialise in providing care for people with dementia, providing 56 nursing and residential beds over three floors. The home is located on Thomas Road in North Baddesley.
The dementia forum will bring together over 120 healthcare professionals, including care managers, social workers, doctors and charities from all over Hampshire.
Dementia expert, Dr Graham Stokes, head of mental health at Bupa Care Homes, will discuss the challenges of caring for people with dementia.
“We need to place the person with dementia at the heart of their care. At the forum I will offer an insight into the world of people with dementia by trying to understand their fears, insecurities and comforts. I will also discuss why some people with dementia can have challenging behaviour, while others haven’t”, he said.
Alistair How, director of Bupa Care Homes, comments: “We are very pleased to be opening a new care home in North Baddesley and are looking forward to welcoming our first residents later this month. We will be providing much-needed care for long and short-stay residents, both funded privately and by the local council.”
