Bupa International announces two key appointments

19 June 2006

Bupa International’s management team has been strengthened with the announcement of two senior appointments.

James Tugendhat has taken up the role of commercial director while Paula Covey has been appointed as the head of marketing.

Keith Biddlestone, managing director for Brighton-based Bupa International, said: “James and Paula both have a wealth of experience and a great understanding of Bupa International and our vision and strategy for the future.

“These are both key roles and will greatly strengthen our management team as we integrate further our operations following the acquisition last year of IHI in Copenhagen and AMEDEX in Miami.”

James started his career in corporate strategy focusing on mergers and integrations. For the last few years he has worked for the consumer goods group Diageo in various marketing and general management roles, before taking on his current assignment for Bupa.

Speaking about his appointment, James said: “I am very pleased to be joining the largest expatriate health insurer in the world – what a challenge. Bupa International has enjoyed spectacular success and I plan to help build on that with IHI and AMEDEX now on board.”

As well as being responsible for marketing, purchasing and integration, James will also be leading on Bupa International’s strategy and will be a key member of the leadership team.

Paula Covey’s new role as head of marketing will see her with overall responsibility for creating and managing the marketing function across all the three businesses.

p>Paula said: “This is a very exciting time for Bupa International as we integrate the two new businesses. Creating a unified marketing strategy will be key to this success and I look forward to working with James and the rest of the team to achieve this goal.”

For 18 years Paula has worked for Bupa – ten of which have been for Bupa International. During this time she has been head of claims, responsible for internet development and joint venture products.

Bupa International has over 640,000 members and provides cover for people of 115 nationalities in 190 different countries. Members have access to a worldwide network of over 5,500 participating hospitals and clinics and to a multi-lingual helpline 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Bupa International was presented in 2005 with the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for its continuous outstanding achievement in the international trade category.
