Bupa delivers care NVQ in record time
19 July 2006
Hundreds of care assistants from Bupa have become the first in the UK to take part in a pioneering government trial allowing carers to gain their NVQ in a month rather than twelve months.
Bupa Care Homes is one of only two companies selected by the National Employer Service of the Learning and Skills Council to pilot the national training programme.
And the trial has achieved record results. With high levels of learner satisfaction, 94 percent of the 211 care workers who took part completed their training compared to the industry average rate of just 67 percent.
The intensive course covers training in areas such as health, care, hygiene and moving and handling. The government plans to re-launch the National Employer Training scheme later this year under the banner ‘Train to Gain’.
In 2005 Bupa Care Homes invested £5 million in training, more than ever before, and was recently recognised by the government as taking the lead in the training of young people by being presented with an Apprenticeship Commitment Certificate.
Mark Walker, the health, safety and training manager for Bupa Care Homes, said: “The dedication of our people is the most important factor in delivering high quality care tailored to our residents’ individual needs. This is why we invest heavily in training and development.
“To achieve these record completion rates is fantastic and has had a knock-on effect inspiring others to want to develop their skills and will help us to retain staff. This has been a great opportunity to be at the forefront of helping to design future training programmes.”
Trina Mumby from the National Employer Service said: ”This is a more effective way of learning and the reality is that the structured, intensive nature of this NVQ delivery model means more time is spent with their tutor than in the past. The results speak for themselves – under this new programme, care assistants are far more likely to successfully complete their qualification and retain what they’ve learnt.”
The delivery model used by Bupa for the National Vocation Qualification level two is called The Bupa STARS Programme, and has proved a huge success in the 47 care homes it has been piloted in by the training body, NVQ UK.
