Bupa warns employers to act now to protect staff from the flu
21 November 2006
Bupa is urging employers to act now and get their employees vaccinated against the flu.
Research shows that the flu vaccine can reduce upper respiratory illness by 24 percent, and sick leave by 43 percent and provide significant cost savings for companies on days lost per employee.1
According to the Consumer Health Information Centre over 150 million working days are lost each year due to flu related illnesses, at a cost of around £6.75 billion.
Last year Bupa Wellness delivered over 20,000 inoculations to around 350 companies in the UK. This year the preventative health specialist expects to vaccinate four times as many people.
Martyn Anthony, head of specialist services at Bupa Wellness says:
“Demand is such that we were planning to give four times the number of vaccinations provided last year. Although many people have flu jabs in early November, it is never too late for employers to protect their staff. The highest incidence of flu can be anytime from December onwards but often peaks between the end of January and the start of February, so we are encouraging companies to book their flu jabs now to ensure a happy and healthy start to 2007.
“Flu is highly infectious, particularly in the workplace and can cost a business dearly in lost productivity. Up to 15 percent of a company’s workforce can be absent with flu over the winter months.
“With delivered flu vaccinations costing as little as £8.75 per employee, this is an inexpensive investment to help protect a company’s productivity and keep staff working as best as they can.”
