One in four care home residents go into care following a stroke
22 September 2003
Recent figures from 245 care homes across the UK have revealed that nearly a quarter (22 percent) of Bupa’s 16,000 residents entered their care home because they required care following a stroke.
“This very high figure underlines how serious a health problem stroke is in Britain today. Bupa is the largest provider of care homes for the elderly in the UK today and this percentage is likely to be representative of care homes generally,” said Dr Clive Bowman, Bupa Care Services medical director.
According to the Stroke Association, over 100,000 people in Britain suffer their first stroke every year, with 350,000 victims of stroke at any one time. Stroke is the largest single cause of severe disability and the range of disabilities vary greatly but often may be severe with a need for a high level of care.
“Appropriate care for stroke sufferers can be specialised. Whilst much effort has been directed at prevention and early treatment, the needs of people with chronic disabilities resulting from stroke have received less attention. Bupa Care Homes endeavour to bring as much quality of life as possible to people disabled by stroke through an individual approach to care and active programmes of daily and special activities,” said Dr Clive Bowman.
