25 July 2005
Bupa’s Wingham Court Care Centre in Claygate, Surrey celebrated the grand opening of 'Mega Bytes' the home's new cyber cafe’ on Thursday, 21 July. The event took place over a 1950's American theme lunch and special guest TV star Ben Fogle, presenter of BBC's Animal Park, was present to officially open the new development.
Mary Hagon, home manager at Bupa's Wingham Court, which cares for older residents as well as the young physically disabled commented: "These facilities will improve our residents' quality of life. It is gives them a new activity to take part in plus the ability to communicate more frequently with the outside world. Some will re-kindle old skills whilst others will learn new skills, I hope that some will undertake distance learning programmes to motivate and improve them mentally and physically."
The 'Mega Bytes' cyber cafe includes four computers with Internet access, a colour printer, scanner and a web camera. All the desks have been designed for people with disabilities and have variable positioning. Ability Net, who provide specialist computer equipment and expertise for people with disabilities have helped to set up the cafe, which will be open from 10am to 7pm daily and have a chef on duty to cook cafe style food.
