Bupa announces official charity for 2006 Great Run Series
25 August 2006
Bupa is pleased to confirm that Marie Curie Cancer Care will be the nominated charity of the 2006 Bupa Great Run Series, including the world’s largest half marathon, the Bupa Great North Run.
As the nominated charity, Marie Curie Cancer Care will receive extensive benefits including 300 guaranteed entries, significant media exposure and the opportunity to raise thousands of pounds for its work.
Bupa, the leading health and care organisation, has sponsored the Great Run Series for 12 years and has recently committed to a further five years of sponsorship, to make it one of the longest running sports sponsorship deals in the country.
Simon Sheard, Bupa’s group marketing director commented on the decision to choose Marie Curie Cancer Care: “The quality of applications we received from all the charities was extremely high and it was a very difficult decision to make, however, Marie Curie Cancer Care’s presentation was particularly impressive.
“Marie Curie Cancer Care were extremely creative and have ambitious plans for the events. We are really looking forward to working with the charity and to helping them raise a significant amount of money through the Bupa Great Run Series to further their essential work.”
Sandra Osbourne, fundraising director for Marie Curie Cancer Care, said: “We are delighted to have been selected as Bupa’s chosen charity for the Bupa Great Run Series. Through the partnership we are aiming to raise significant funds, to enable the charity to provide packages of care designed to help our hospice patients ‘feel better’. This may be increased access to our range of complementary therapies such as physiotherapy or hydrotherapy or a piece of new equipment for a gym.”
Marie Curie Cancer Care is aiming to raise at least £500,000 in 2006 through exploiting its status as official charity and will support this through a dedicated marketing and PR campaign, which will also reflect Bupa’s current Feel Better advertising campaign.
Bupa’s current charity partner for the Great Run Series is the Leukaemia Research Fund, which has enjoyed a five-year relationship with the events, raising more than £3 million for its work.
Bupa spends more than £145m a year on cancer treatment, covering all stages - including terminal - and does not withdraw cover for the condition at any stage.
Last year the charity CancerBacup conducted a survey of 14 medical insurance providers in which it found that only Bupa offered adequate cover for cancer conditions.
Bupa also developed the UK’s first Heart and Cancer policy on the back of evidence suggesting these were the two biggest healthcare worries.
Bupa has established networks of specialist cancer centres for the treatment of breast, bowel and gynaecological cancers, where people can be looked after by some of the country’s leading cancer experts.
