Top award is a personal best for Bupa Care Homes staff

26 October 2006

Bupa Care Homes Personal Best programme, which encourages carers to provide a truly individual service, has won the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development annual People Management Award.

The initiative encourages carers in its 297 homes to understand the needs of each resident and helps care assistants to develop the skills they need to offer personalised care that is tailored to the individual.

The Personal Best programme has led to changes that help residents feel more at home, for example, getting chickens for the home’s garden for a resident who had kept livestock all his life, a care home manager volunteering to be shaved by female care assistants so they could get feedback on the best way to shave male residents, and laundry staff sitting and talking to residents in their room while mending clothes.

Dean Cowley, Bupa Care Services said: "This award shows that all our 26,000 staff are committed to making a real difference to the happiness and well-being of the people we care for. They really understand that it’s often the little things that mean a lot. I am pleased that the dedication shown by all of our staff has been recognised."

Duncan Brown, CIPD Assistant Director General, said: "Bupa Care Services are clearly passionate about what they do. We learned a lot about how this initiative helped staff improve their performance in their day to day jobs, with a long-term, not quick fix perspective.

"The initiative also directly engaged and involved line managers, secured their commitment to improved customer care and was flexible to suit the needs of different locations, rather than a top-down-imposed, traditional customer care training initiative."

Bupa’s Personal Best programme was launched in March 2004 and involves staff physically putting themselves in their residents’ shoes for example by being blindfolded and fed, pushed in a wheelchair or hoisted by colleagues, all of which helps them empathise with the residents they look after.

Less than two years later Bupa Care Homes has received its highest ever satisfaction score among residents and as a result the programme is set to be rolled out among Bupa Care Homes in Spain.

Bupa beat 15 other organisations for the People Management Award including Tesco, The Royal Bank of Scotland, Unilever and Rolls Royce. The overall winner and category winners were announced last night at the CIPD’s Annual Conference and Exhibition in Harrogate.

The award follows hot on the heels of a South East Training Award for Bupa Care Services jointly with NVQUK for its pioneering STARS programme which lets carers gain their NVQ 2 in a month rather than a year.
