Recognition for Bupa Redwood in MPs' report
27 July 2006
An influential group of MPs has praised Bupa’s Redwood Diagnostic Treatment Centre for "fostering a spirit of co-operation" between the NHS and the private sector.
The House of Commons Health Select Committee report highlighted the joint venture between the local Surrey and Sussex NHS Trust and Bupa Hospitals as "by far and away the most productive of the treatment centres to date".
MPs added that the mix of seconded NHS staff and dedicated Bupa employees working hand in hand at Redwood in Surrey had "proved very effective".
Exclusively used for NHS patients, the unit based on the same site as the East Surrey Hospital has already treated nearly 40,000 people, providing orthopaedics, gynaecology, general surgery and diagnostic endoscopies.
Redwood has also made a significant contribution to reducing waiting times and in a recent patient satisfaction survey, 98 percent of patients considered the service they received as being quite good, very good or excellent.
Redwood general manager Andy Wood said: "Our close working relationship with the NHS has gone from strength to strength and we are very confident about the future. Redwood operates as a true partnership with Bupa and NHS staff working side by side in delivery of excellent front line care to NHS patients. This is turn has meant waiting times are down and helped inspire innovation in areas such as pre-admission, health screening, theatre utilisation and improved administration processes."
Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust chief executive Gary Walker said: "Partnership working is the future for healthcare delivery in the UK. The relationship the Trust has with Bupa Redwood is just one of a growing number of examples across the NHS where effective partnerships can deliver better healthcare to patients."
