Managing director goes back to school

Children from St Mary Magdalene, Roman Catholic Primary School, have been enjoying fun and rewarding paired reading sessions for one hour each week as a part of Bupa Community Connections Book Buddies scheme. Keith Biddlestone, the managing director of Brighton-based Bupa International has been back in the classroom taking part in the reading sessions, and has also donated a laptop to help the children with their reading.
The machine also has special technology to help one visually impaired child to be a part of the reading scheme. Halden Eady, headmistress from St Mary Magdalene school says: “He will get so much use out of the laptop, he copes very well already but this will make a huge difference to him.“
The nationally run Book Buddies scheme provides volunteer readers for local primary schools. The volunteers help to improve the children’s reading ages and encourage them to get the most fun out of reading. The children’s self confidence and esteem is boosted and they have a real sense of achievement. The team of 12 volunteers from Bupa International are supported by Bupa’s Community Connections team who encourage staff to take part in volunteering and fundraising in their local communities.
“We are delighted that our staff have volunteered to be part of the Bupa Community Connections Book Buddy programme and we hope that more people will take part in the future. Bupa International is very much part of the local community as we have been based here since 1979 and now have over 350 employees from in and around the Brighton and Hove area. Our support for Book Buddies is just part of our ongoing commitment to the people of the city,” Said Keith Biddlestone.
