Bupa appoints new head of infection
29 September 2006
Bupa Hospitals have appointed Kathryn Topley to the newly-created role of head of infection control.
Kathryn will be responsible for reviewing infection control policy across all Bupa hospitals, training and developing staff in the area, as well as communication, audit and surveillance.
Kathryn has over ten years’ experience in the field of infection control and she joins Bupa from the Hospital Infection Society. She worked as regional co-ordinator of the National Prevalence Survey, which provides detailed statistics to the government on infection rates in British hospitals. Kathryn trained as a general nurse before developing an interest in infection and becoming part of the infection control team at the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust.
Kathryn Topley said: "Diseases such as MRSA have received a lot of media attention in recent years but very often the message about infection control gets lost amongst the hype surrounding an outbreak. I’m excited that part of my new role will be to dispel misconceptions by providing patients with information on Bupa’s infection control measures."
In her new role, Kathryn will visit every Bupa hospital in the UK and meet the teams responsible for infection control, share best practice ideas around different units and encourage even more consistency in clinical practices to minimise infection.
Jan Clement, head of clinical services added: "I’m delighted to welcome Kathryn to Bupa. We have always prioritised cleanliness and hygiene in our hospitals and as head of infection control Kathryn will ensure that our high standards are maintained. Kathryn has vast experience in the field and her role in developing a comprehensive strategy across the network of Bupa hospitals will be invaluable in helping us promote patient and staff safety."
