Bupa Wellness launches new health at work service for SMEs

03 October 2005

Bupa Wellness today launched the Health at Work Service, to bring occupational health within the reach of small and medium sized businesses (SMEs).

The Bupa Health at Work Service is the first all-inclusive workplace health service of its kind and is designed for companies that employ between 50 and 250 people.

Sickness absence costs businesses up to £495 per employee per year, and can be a particular problem for SMEs where every employee is critical to the business. In a workforce of 100, the annual cost to the business can be around £50,000*.

The Bupa Health at Work Service aims to help companies comply with regulations regarding health at work, recruit people who are fit for the job, and reduce and manage sickness absence.

For an annual subscription based on the number of employees, the scheme will provide companies with unlimited access to:

  • a telephone or email helpline for managers to contact occupational health professionals for guidance on workplace health issues
  • health reports on suitability for the job for new employees or staff changing jobs
  • advice on return to work options for frequent or long-term sick cases.

Full access to the service for a year’s unlimited usage will cost £3,000, or £30 per employee for businesses with more than 100 employees.

Dr Jenny Leeser, Bupa Wellness clinical director, said: “Smaller companies cannot afford large-scale on-site occupational health services, but they are subject to the same laws as bigger companies, and they are at risk of prosecution if they don’t do anything at all to identify and reduce their workplace health risks."

“The Bupa Health at Work Service will help them to fulfil those requirements and reduce their sickness absence by consulting our occupational health professionals, asking job applicants to complete our pre-placement health questionnaire and referring frequent or long-term absence cases to us for assessment and management.”

Bupa Wellness is the market leader in corporate health, and, in addition to occupational health, it offers companies health assessments, health promotion, employee assistance programmes and on-site medical services.
