Patients receiving IV antibiotics can have prolonged hospital stays, these patients can often benefit from early discharge and in some cases admission and readmissions can be avoided all together allowing the NHS to better use its time, staff and resources.
It has been reported that large numbers of patients (14%) need to return to hospital within a month of their original procedure because complications have arisen.
Typical reasons for readmission are a failure to manage a long term condition such as diabetes properly, a failure to properly exercise after surgery, contracting a hospital borne infection, a patient having nowhere to report issues that they experience post-discharge or a failure of medical staff to pick up the early warning signs of post-surgical complications.
