What is an apicectomy?
An apicectomy is the removal of the tip of the root (ie apex). This minor surgical operation is required if infection persists after root treatment, or if the dentist is unable to seal the root tip with a normal root filling.
What happens?
- your dentist will numb the tooth and surrounding area
- a flap of gum is lifted
- the tip of the root and a small amount of surrounding bone and tissue, are removed
- the area is cleaned and disinfected
- the centre of the exposed root is usually filled
- the gum is stitched back into place
What should I do?
- keep the area very clean – your dentist may advise you on appropriate pain control
- prepare for some possible swelling and discomfort – again, your dentist may advise you on pain control
- you will probably need to have your stitches removed and a further X-ray taken to review the treatment
