Dentures

Glossary

What is a denture?

Dentures are a removable replacement for missing teeth. They may be partial (replacing some teeth), or complete (replacing all teeth). Partial dentures are usually made of a metal framework with artificial teeth attached. Complete dentures usually have an acrylic plate supporting the artificial teeth. Some dentures are fitted immediately after teeth have been removed. In this case, the gums will shrink and it may be necessary to have a new set of dentures about six months later.

What happens?

  • your dentist may take X-rays to assess the health of your mouth
  • various stages and visits are needed to make dentures
  • impressions are taken of the prepared teeth and the teeth of the opposite jaw
  • you may need visits to:
  • take impressions of your mouth
  • take special, more accurate impressions
  • produce wax bite blocks to measure your bite
  • ensure that your bite and appearance is correct with wax dentures
  • fit the denture
  • make adjustments and fine tuning

Advice for denture wearers

  • clean dentures with a toothbrush or nailbrush, and soap and water
  • if you use specially formulated pastes, follow the manufacturers’ instructions
  • when cleaning your dentures, always hold them over a bowl of water
  • never use bleach or boiling water to clean your dentures
  • attend your dentist for regular check ups, even if you have complete dentures
  • brush any remaining teeth thoroughly – these act as anchors for the denture
  • don’t forget to attend your dentist for yearly check ups (even if you have full dentures)
