Veneer

Glossary

What is a veneer?

A veneer is a porcelain cover which coats the tooth like a false fingernail. Veneers are used to disguise discoloured teeth or gaps between widely spaced teeth.

What happens?

  • your dentist may take X-rays to assess the health of your mouth
  • a very thin layer of tooth may be trimmed away from the front surface and tip
  • a shade guide may be used to select the correct colour of porcelain
  • impressions of the lower and upper teeth are taken and sent to the laboratory, where the veneer is constructed

How is it fitted?

  • the veneer may be checked for colour and fit
  • if you and your dentist are happy with it, the veneer is permanently bonded to the prepared surface
  • the bond sets immediately
  • excess cement may be trimmed away

What should I do?

  • attend the dentist for regular check ups
  • keep the gum around the veneer free from plaque
  • brush and floss thoroughly
