General questions about health risk management services

I have a lot of services to manage sickness absence, how is this one different? Hide

Understanding the relationship between individuals’ wellbeing and their productivity in the workplace is fundamental to the success of any business.

Sickness absence, unscheduled absence and early retirement on health grounds are proven to take a heavy financial too. Equally, difficult life circumstances can adversely affect employee performance.

Leaving issues unresolved can lead to long-term problems and can bring significant cost implications. Poor performance can lead to a drop in output quality and customer satisfaction. And the longer an employee is off sick on a sustained basis, the less likely they are to return to work.

Previously, resolving these issues required the complex co-ordination of occupational health, treatment and rehabilitation, counselling and other ‘care’ services – but now there is a single, efficient way of managing each case through to a satisfactory conclusion.

What are the benefits of Bupa Health Risk Management? Hide

Bupa Health Risk Management can co-ordinate, manage, monitor and report on each case – to a satisfactory resolution – whatever that takes.

Results show that early intervention, both clinical and other specialist assistance, and proactive management of employees’ health and care issues can successfully:

  • reduce absenteeism
  • get people back to work quicker
  • identify and help rectify reasons for poor performance
  • reduce absence-related costs (sick pay/cover/overtime)
  • reduce the impact on pension scheme funds (early retirement due to sickness)
  • reduce problems in resourcing and covering for absences
  • encourage people back to work sooner
  • enable you to make informed decisions on employee performance
  • boost staff performance, productivity and profitability
  •  reduce employee risk, minimise insurance claims and lower premiums

From a business perspective, the savings from implementing an integrated health risk management strategy can range from 0.25 percent to 1 percent of payroll.1 As an example, reducing absenteeism by 1 percent across an organisation with 2,000 could save £95,000 per annum in absence-related costs alone.2

How does this work if I use other providers for some of my health provision? Hide

Bupa is happy to work with your current providers and, if additional services are required, our team will arrange provision at competitive rates and availability.

When managing an employee’s case. We can assess the suitability of your current health provision – ensuring that, wherever possible, no unnecessary costs are incurred.

Will there always be an outcome for each case? Hide

Yes. Unmanaged long-term absence is not an option with this service. It is geared towards managing your cases of sickness absence or poor performance through to a definite resolution, whether that is:

  • a return to work in the original role
  • redeployment into another role
  • early ill-health retirement – based on clinical proof on the condition, and this is aligned with strict criteria (this reduces the impact on company pension funds)
  • resignation from the post
  • disciplinary action or termination of employment
What are the benefits for my employees? Hide

From an employee perspective, active encouragement and practical support for a return to work helps stop long-term absentees thinking of themselves as “forgotten casualties”, and reassures them that they are still considered a valuable asset. Conversely, active intervention helps identify specific performance and attendance issues and prevent ongoing drains on the company.

What management information do I get? Hide

Monthly operational packages are available in addition to quarterly analysis packages to help establish a baseline and review progress improvements.

Do you need access to confidential HR information on my employees? Hide

Yes. To provide the service we will need access to relevant and appropriate personal data, including contact information, personal details and relevant absence history along with information gathered directly through our process and procedures.

How does Bupa collect and manage data to reassure me about confidentiality? Hide

All data captured throughout our process is held and managed securely, respecting compliance with current data protection and legislation governing access to medical records.
