Physiotherapy
Sports and orthopaedic medicine
We provide the widest possible range of solutions for the treatment of bone, muscle and joint problems.
Almost all disciplines can be accessed through our musculoskeletal service centre of excellence based at the Barbican Medical Centre in London and some services are available at other centres.
An on-site physiotherapist or osteopath services can provide your employees with much faster access to treatment – and rapid referral for more specialist treatment – leading to quicker rehabilitation, less time off work and fewer ill-health retirements.
An on-site specialist can work with your occupational health team to by identify workplace problems and reduce your company’s exposure to the effects of musculoskeletal issues. This could involve giving display screen workstation advice, fast-tracking problem cases, advising on changes of duties or the purchase of ergonomically correct furniture.
Bupa has extensive experience of occupational health and in particular sickness absence management. The provision of musculoskeletal services to employers is always made within an occupational health setting, which facilitates improved communication between practitioners, and quicker and more convenient referral pathways. Each employee is assigned a case manager and using a multidisciplinary approach we are able to deliver rapid interventions when needed. Case conferences are often used to ensure that your employees receive the most appropriate treatment.
Sports and orthopaedic physicians specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of muscle, bone and joint problems. Their focus is on returning injured clients to full activity, whether in a sporting or occupational context. They are the experts in terms of exercise and rehabilitation, and will have access to all the imaging modalities, and the most appropriate surgeon (should surgery be necessary), for your employee’s problem.
Physiotherapists treat a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, using a combination of exercise, manual therapy and other modalities such as ultrasound and acupuncture. The emphasis of their assessment and treatment is hands-on to optimise recovery.
All Bupa physiotherapists are musculoskeletal specialists with a minimum of five years’ experience, many with postgraduate specialist qualifications and experience in occupational health, manipulation, motion analysis and sports injuries.
Osteopaths encourage the body's own self-healing mechanism by massaging and manipulating the skeleton and muscles, as well as improving the mobility and flexibility of the joints.
Podiatrists assess gait, posture and biomechanics during walking and running to identify the cause of painful symptoms. Treatment may include the use of specialised orthotic devices to improve function.
Radiologists are medically trained doctors whose specialty is imaging and its interpretation. They are the experts in interpreting scans and using imaging (eg, ultrasound) to guide injections more accurately.
Sports massage therapy differs from other massages by being very exercise or posture specific when treating. It works on the superficial and deep muscles, as well as surrounding soft tissues such as ligaments and tendons and can help relieve muscular tension, pain and discomfort in the neck and the shoulders.
