Our Donnington Care Home in Newbury are excited to tell us that they have opened their memory garden, helping help residents, staff and relatives reminisce those who have sadly passed away. The garden features a reminiscence bench and a memory wall, all designed around the resident’s past interests enabling them to reconnect with their memories.
Linda Patel our well-being and activity manager tells us that these places provide an opportunity for residents, families and staff to remember those who have passed away, giving them a space for reminiscing in peace and quiet. Even for those not grieving, they provide a change of scenery and help some of our residents with dementia to remember a garden they may have had or tended to when they were younger. The sights and sounds can help stimulate their senses and create a feeling of calm.
Our rose garden is a place where residents can plant a rose in memory of their loved ones and inside the home a memory wall holds poems encouraging residents to talk about what life was like 60 or 70 years ago.
