BUPA Lifestyle and Income Protection

People are often unaware of the financial effects long term illness or disability can create and the impact that this might have on their income. That is why at BUPA we provide cover to help cope with the consequence of a serious long term illness. Without an adequate regular income you could be risking your home, your car, the standard of living to which you have become accustomed.

The aim of BUPA Lifestyle and Income Protection is to provide you with a regular monthly income if you are unable to work because of ill health and this results in loss of earnings. If you are not in paid work you will be eligible to claim if you find yourself unable to carry out three of six specified activities of daily living.

How much benefit is available?

With retirement cover you decide how much benefit you need, how soon and for how long you need it to be paid. BUPA Lifestyle and Income Protection will continue until your specified retirement date.

If you are in paid work earning up to £50,000 a year, you can receive the benefits of your cover or 50 percent of your "pre-incapacity earnings", whichever is the lower. If you are not in paid work you can receive the Homemaker benefit shown on the registration certificate we will send you.

Can you increase your cover?

There are two main ways you can increase the benefit you could receive:

  • You can select the indexation option which will increase your potential benefit each year in line with inflation, up to a maximum of 10 percent
  • If you are an employee you can also increase your benefits after a pay rise or moving to a new job. You will be able to do this twice over the period of your cover²

When will your benefit payments start?

When you take out BUPA Lifestyle and Income Protection you will need to select a deferred period from when you are first incapacitated to when you can start to receive benefit. This may be one, three, six or 12 months if you are in paid work, it will be three months if you are not. One month after the end of this period you will start to receive your benefit, which will be one month in arrears.
