Surgeons during operation

What happens during surgical squint correction?

Your surgeon will make small cuts in the outer coat of your child’s eye to access the muscles around the eye. There are two techniques that your surgeon will use, depending on the type of squint your child has.

  • Muscle recession. This involves detaching the muscle from your child’s eye and moving it further back so that it becomes weakened.
  • Muscle resection. This is when a section of the muscle is removed to tighten and strengthen it.

If needed, your surgeon may choose to operate on the muscles in both eyes depending on the nature of the squint.

After the procedure, you’ll be given eye drops for your child and a date for a follow-up appointment.

Understanding squint correction methods

Surgery to correct a squint is usually a day case, meaning your child can go home on the same day. The surgery is carried out under general anaesthesia, which means your child will be asleep for the procedure. It usually takes about one hour.

To help put your mind at rest, all patients undergoing surgery to correct their squint receive an aftercare service. This includes a follow-up appointment with a consultant, as well as readmission into hospital within 30 days of the initial procedure, should it be needed.

In the unlikely event of any complications arising from your procedure, the cost of additional treatment required may also be covered subject to the terms and conditions of the package that you choose.
