Anxiety 'not directly linked' to birthing problems

15 August 2006

Expectant mothers under pressure should not worry about the direct impact of anxiety on their unborn child, claims a new study.

Researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch analysed data from 50 previous studies on women suffering from anxiety during pregnancy, spanning 39 years and including 48 different sample groups.

The previous tests had not given a definite answer as to whether anxiety in pregnant women causes birthing complications. However, the new analysis found that pregnant women who experienced heightened anxiety within a normal range saw no effect on birth outcomes.

"Pregnancy can be an emotional time for women and, for some, anxiety associated with the pregnancy can be compounded by pre-existing difficulties such as having an inadequate social support system," said lead author Dr Heather Littleton.

Although anxiety in expectant mothers was not found to have an effect on perinatal outcomes, its effect on other factors such as pre-eclampsia during pregnancy has not yet been studied.

The doctors suggest further research into the area is needed to discern how best to treat anxious pregnant women.

"Such work evaluating the mental and physical health of women during pregnancy could help to increase the number of healthy babies that are born," said Dr Littleton.

The results of the study will be presented at the 114th annual convention of the American Psychological Association (APA).
