Breast milk 'could lower eczema risk'

28 July 2006

Breast milk could lower the chance of babies at high risk of suffering from eczema from developing the disorder, new research published in the Archives of Disease in Childhood suggests.

Natural prebiotics found in human breast milk promote the growth of certain bacteria in the stomach which can boost the development of a healthy immune system in young babies. Scientists found that formula milk based on this prebiotic could reduce the incidence of eczema in infants at high risk of the condition.

In the study, researchers recruited 259 full-term babies born to one or both parents who had eczema, hay fever or asthma. The mothers were all advised to breastfeed their babies, but for those unable to start or continue this, their babies were put into two groups, with 102 given prebiotic formula feed and 104 given normal formula.

Parents then kept a symptom diary over the next six months and the babies were given monthly checkups for any signs of eczema or other conditions.

Results from the study revealed that over twice as many babies given the normal formula developed eczema compared to those given the prebiotic formula.

In conclusion, this study suggests prebiotics can help lower the risk of eczema in a high-risk population of newborn infants, although more research is needed.
