Teens 'do not use condoms properly'

11 August 2006

Many teenagers do not use condoms properly and may be risking unwanted pregnancies or contracting sexually transmitted diseases, according to new research.

Experts at Southampton University interviewed 1,400 teens aged 14 to 18 across England, around half of whom were sexually active.

Among the 373 teenagers who said they had used a condom the last time they had sex, six percent said they had put it on after penetration and six percent admitted they continued to have penetrative sex after they had removed it.

Just over 100 teenagers were also asked to keep a diary of their sexual activity for a six-month period. Results from the 714 diary entries found that a condom was not used on 322 occasions.

Common reasons given for not using a condom were to enhance intimacy, because other contraception was being used, because sex felt better without one or simply because couples got "carried away".

The authors of the study, published in the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections, concluded: "If we are to see a reduction in [sexually transmitted infection] prevalence, it is essential that young people understand the importance of using condoms consistently and correctly and are also equipped with the skills and knowledge to do so."
