Cycling events, days out and holidays
Active days out
Throughout the spring, summer and early autumn there are hundreds of cycle ride events right across the UK, many for charity. There are events to cater for all abilities and levels of fitness from short rides of around 10 miles to long-distance rides organised by cycle clubs. You can get information on cycle events in your local area from your local bike shop, community website, charity websites or cycle clubs. For example, the Cyclists Touring Club website (see below) has listings for a variety of events and rides.
Cycling is a great family activity. The National Cycle Network provides 8,000 miles of cycling and walking routes throughout the UK. By 2005 the network will be extended to over 10,000 miles. There are more than 7,500 places of interest to visit on the National Cycle Network and there are many traffic-free routes that are ideal for new cyclists or for a family day out. For more information on the National Cycle Network, visit the Sustrans website (see below).
Events
Cycling events for charities, such as bikeathons, are an enjoyable way to get out for a ride and raise money for good cause. A bonus is that the route has been worked out for you and many of them are on held on traffic-free routes. For example, the Leukaemia Research Fund organises a range of children's bikeathons around the country (see below for more details) and an all-age London bikeathon (see below for more details).
Cycling holidays and short breaks
A cycling holiday or short break is a great way to see the sights and get fit. Many cycle tour organisers make your life easy by carrying your luggage for you, leaving you free to enjoy the scenery at a pace that suits you.
Several companies organise weekend cycling breaks in the UK and Europe which give you an opportunity to explore an area and meet fellow cyclists. For those who want to be more adventurous, a number of travel companies run escorted cycling tours further afield. You can explore the canals of Holland, the chateaux of the Loire Valley, the wild and rugged landscape of New Zealand, the lively salsa culture of Cuba and even the cultural treasures of the Far East by bike. With two good wheels the world is your oyster.
