Using cycle sense to be safe

Cycling is a great way keep fit and healthy. And, when travelling in towns and cities, you may find that you get to your destination more quickly and in a better frame of mind than those who have travelled by other means. Like all means of transport, when cycling it is important to be as safe as possible, the following tips should help:

  • make sure you understand and pay attention to traffic regulations
  • be aware of other road users and road conditions
  • signal your intentions clearly to other road users, enabling them to predict your movements and take them into account
  • ride confidently, placing yourself on the road so that other road users can see you
  • make yourself visible by wearing bright or reflective clothing and using bright lights at night

The London Cycling Campaign (LCC) provides a free 16-page booklet, "Cycle Sense", which is downloadable from its website (see below) and provides useful hints and tips for cyclists including:

  • getting started
  • cycling training
  • maintaining your bike
  • confidence and awareness
  • sharing the road

Once you've been cycling for a while, you might want to make more of your cycling habit by exploring mountain biking, competitive racing or going on long-distance rides. There are a range of national and local clubs that can help you to enjoy these activities, please see our next article "Welcome to the club" for more information.
